Application hangs on large single file.

Post by jculp » Thu Mar 22, 2018 4:33 pm

Just came across this for third time and finally saw what might was the cause.

In downloading a large SINGLE file of 50+ GB (2160p MKV File), the allocated memory of 16GB (in Usenetic preferences) (of 32GB) is used up during downloading and then Usenetic pauses giving a Warning window that application has run out of memory and to quit/force quit apps to free up application memory.
The only apps listed are Usenetic and Finder.
Usenetic causes Spinning ball of "I refuse to Do Shit" in the Usenetic app only,
Finder and other apps work fine.
Selecting Usenetic to quit does nothing, Force Quit does nothing.
Activity Monitor doesn't even show Usenetic running nor a force quit option.
Trying to Shut Down the computer does nothing as the hung program prevents it.
Final option is power button to shut it down.

Don't know if you can do anything about it as it seems to be a download cache memory limitation based on available memory hardware.
Perhaps a built in preference for the use of available disc space(SSD) as an override on large single files that exceed the default preference file limit.

For now I will just avoid downloading Large single files or use an alternate app in those rare cases.

Thanks for your attention and efforts.

A 50+ GB single file is insane for usenet !!
To make this work a lot has to be changed in Usenetic, but I'll add it to the list.

Thanks.

I agree.
Its the first time I have seen such a large single file.
I would put it as something to look at after more important work is complete.
Like you said its insane.
Guess they never heard of RAR files.

I personally will just skip such single large files in the future and as will most users I assume.

Large files up to the allocated working memory amount (16GB) still work fine.

Don't sweat it too much as its probably .01% of user experience.

Thanks for the great App so far.

John

PS

I would just put a note in the General instructions to NOT download single files larger than 90% of the Memory allocation in Usenetic preferences.
For example: If you have allocated 16GB of memory for Usenetc app use, do not download any SINGLE FILES greater than 13GB in size.
If you are fortunate to have 64 or 128 GB of RAM on board than you can obviously increase those file sizes with no download problems.

Usenet will Hang and not be able to quit or force quit.
A power button shut down will be required and any unsaved Queue changes and download history will be lost.
Restart will default to previous Saved state and reset in the Queue files which may have already been downloaded.
Does not affect files already downloaded to Finder location.
They remain fine.
